New Mexico Teen Mental Health Programs to Receive Funding from Meta’s $567 Million Penalty

    August 8, 2026

SANTA FE, Mexico / RankWire.AI / – Meta must pay a $567 million court-ordered fine after a New Mexico judge ruled that Facebook and Instagram are a public nuisance endangering minors. Following a trial in Santa Fe that lasted several weeks, Presiding Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered the money to be directed into a youth mental health fund. The ruling criticized the social media giant for causing widespread psychological harm and not protecting young users from digital exploitation.

This new financial penalty builds on an earlier $375 million jury verdict issued in March 2026 during the initial phase of the state’s legal case. During that trial, jurors found Meta guilty of violating New Mexico consumer protection laws by misrepresenting safety features for younger users. When combined, the two rulings hold Meta liable for a total of $942 million in the state enforcement action led by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, with the latest order increasing the total amount owed.

The court’s detailed remedial order allocates $420 million of the funds directly to clinical mental health services for children across New Mexico. The rest will support public awareness campaigns, early screening initiatives, and community prevention programs over the next five years. Additionally, the ruling imposes strict operational requirements on Meta. The company must enforce default private settings for under-18 accounts, limit daily usage, restrict notifications, and improve screening for child sexual abuse material.

Meta Ordered to Contribute $567 Million in New Mexico for Teen Mental Health Support

This enforcement action in Mexico stands as one of the largest penalties against a major tech company for child safety violations. Attorney General Torrez launched the lawsuit after investigations revealed that Meta’s algorithms systematically exposed minor accounts to predatory contact and explicit content. While requiring significant product changes, Judge Biedscheid did not order mandatory identity verification for users under 13, citing protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

After the court session, Meta representatives confirmed they plan to appeal the ruling to higher courts. In an official statement, Meta emphasized its investments in creating age-appropriate features, parental controls, and automated moderation tools across its platforms. Company officials argued the ruling mischaracterizes their platform’s design and ignores their efforts to remove harmful content and identify malicious actors.

This decision occurs amid increasing legal pressure on social media companies nationwide. Over 40 state attorneys general, along with hundreds of local school districts, have filed similar lawsuits. They argue that platform algorithms foster addictive use among teenagers. The New Mexico case sets an important legal precedent. It influences ongoing and future cases in federal courts scheduled later this year.

As Meta prepares to appeal the $567 million penalty for teen mental health programs, state officials are reviewing how to allocate the proceeds. They plan to prioritize rural healthcare, behavioral counseling, and school health centers. The measures required by the court will stay in effect for five years, pending the outcome of Meta’s appeal.
