Free and Go Users to Benefit from Default GPT-5.6 Luna in ChatGPT Access Expansion

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening access to ChatGPT for Free and Go plans by offering unlimited text chats powered by GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this update will begin next week and will include safeguards against misuse. During this rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will serve as the default model for these users. Additionally, free users will get a Think button, providing more time to analyze complex questions before generating a reply.

The unlimited feature applies solely to text conversations within ChatGPT. Limits will still be in place for file uploads, image creation, and other tools that demand extra processing. The Think feature will be available next week alongside the increased text allowance. It enables Luna to take extra time for reasoning before delivering an answer. Consequently, ChatGPT users on Free and Go plans will enjoy wider access to the core chat service, but not unlimited use of all features.

GPT-5.6 includes Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed for different levels of performance and computational requirements. Luna offers a faster, more cost-effective option within the lineup. OpenAI stated that ChatGPT now reaches roughly one billion users weekly across tasks like search, research, planning, and writing. With this latest update, Luna is now at the core of the standard experience for Free and Go accounts, while separate rules remain for tools outside regular text chats.

Paid subscribers get enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol features

ChatGPT Plus and Pro members now receive an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily conversations. Sol supports both quick replies and more in-depth reasoning within paid plans. The company explained that the revised model provides more targeted responses and skips unnecessary details when short answers suffice. Plus and Pro users also gain access to a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop. This control allows them to adjust how much processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, writing, coding, and similar tasks.

Internal tests show the newest models also have lower rates of factual errors, the company reported. The tests involved financial, medical, and legal prompts that required detailed factual responses. Results indicated about 62% fewer responses with at least one factual mistake for GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol showed a reduction of around 68% under the same evaluation. The company also noted improved handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details impacted answers.

Safety protocols remain in place despite expanded ChatGPT access

The latest models also feature enhanced protections for users identified as under 18. The safeguards cover areas such as romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute real-world relationships. Additional restrictions address sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. The company mentioned they introduced new assessments for responses involving younger users. Unlimited text conversations for Free and Go accounts will continue to operate within the platform’s existing abuse prevention measures.

This update focuses on the core ChatGPT experience. It does not alter every product using GPT-5.6. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions in ChatGPT Work and Codex stay unchanged with this update. Paid subscribers can access the new Sol model and reasoning controls now. Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited chats and the Think button will be available next week. Uploads, images, and other tools will still have separate usage limits.
