MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit free Gemini access to its Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026. This change impacts Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro once the new model rules are in place. Google states that this update is part of broader shifts to how models are available across its consumer AI offerings. The company revealed the new access structure in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus will still access Flash-Lite and Flash, but they will no longer have access to Pro. Google has not announced a single public transition date for all AI Plus users. The company says affected customers will receive an email explaining when the new access rules apply to their accounts. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The timing for Plus accounts depends on the notice sent by Google.
Google describes Flash-Lite as a fast, efficient model suited for everyday tasks like summarization and brainstorming. Flash offers more features while maintaining a balance between speed and reasoning for simple and complex requests. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini model, designed for demanding tasks such as complex mathematics and coding. Google also states that Pro provides a deeper understanding across text, files, images, and video. Response times for Pro might also be longer than with other Gemini models.
Paid subscriptions keep broader Gemini access
Users with access to a model can choose from low, medium, or high effort levels. Google explains that higher effort can enhance task completion and generate more detailed responses. These settings also use more of a user’s available usage quota. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will also gain access to Deep Think, a feature for maximum parallel reasoning on complex tasks. This feature is only available to the two higher subscription tiers.
The October restrictions follow earlier changes made on May 17, 2026, to Gemini usage limits. Google transitioned Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that reset every five hours until a weekly quota is used up. Usage depends on prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Paid users have higher limits, but premium models and features can consume those limits faster. These changes also affected users under 18 on July 24.
Subscription tiers influence Gemini restrictions
Google’s current usage limits are set for users without a Google AI plan. AI Plus offers twice the standard limits. AI Pro increases those limits to four times the standard. AI Ultra provides either five times or 20 times the AI Pro level, depending on the subscription. Features like media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can use larger portions of the quota. Google states paid users have higher limits than free users.
The October changes specifically target Gemini Apps on personal Google accounts. Google keeps separate rules for work or school accounts. Users can manage, upgrade, or cancel Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. After the update, free personal accounts will only access Flash-Lite instead of Flash and Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new rules take effect.
