Pacific Islands to Receive Over $150 Million in U.S. Support Benefits

KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – On September 1, the United States unveiled a commitment of more than $150 million to aid Pacific Island nations. The focus areas include energy, infrastructure, digital technology, and maritime security. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau delivered the announcement during the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue in Palau. The package combines planned funding, technical assistance, and feasibility studies for several island economies. The State Department explained that these programs aim to improve energy reliability, transportation, communications, economic growth, and law enforcement capacity.

US unveils $150 million-plus Pacific Islands support
US support package directs more than $150 million toward Pacific Island programs.

A major part of the support is a $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative for Pacific Island nations. The State Department stated that it plans to work with Congress to allocate these funds. The initiative will promote increased fuel storage and measures to enhance electricity grid stability. U.S. officials highlighted that the funding tackles energy supply challenges faced by Pacific countries. This initiative represents a significant portion of the overall package announced at the regional meeting.

Tonga will benefit from separate support for a fuel infrastructure feasibility study led by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, or USTDA. Agency documents show a grant of $1,420,872 awarded to Pacific Energy South West Pacific Limited for this purpose. The study will evaluate port upgrades, pipelines, fuel storage, and adjustments to Tonga’s fuel pricing system. It aims to increase the nation’s fuel storage capacity from about 15 to 20 days of supply to approximately 60 days.

The broader package also includes a significant port upgrade on Penrhyn in the northern Cook Islands. The State Department, working with Congress, plans to contribute $50 million, while New Zealand intends to provide NZ$17.5 million. New Zealand will lead the implementation alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The project aims to improve port safety, transport access, cargo handling, and service connections for the remote atoll. The port initiative was announced alongside the broader Pacific support package in Palau.

USTDA also revealed plans for digital and transportation projects in Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. In Tonga, the agency will fund a feasibility study to modernize the national data center and network. In the Marshall Islands, technical assistance will cover the mobile network, ports in Majuro and Ebeye, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will also receive feasibility study support for relocating Belau National Hospital. These projects focus on communications, transportation, and public infrastructure across various Pacific Island nations.

Regional support expands with maritime security and digital initiatives

Another component of U.S. assistance involves maritime law enforcement and security cooperation. The State Department has allocated $17 million, pending congressional approval, to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The program includes legal updates, compliance training, and technology for sea activity monitoring. Additionally, the U.S. and Palau will co-chair a new conference of Pacific police ministers. The agenda will cover maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit finance.

The package also supports cloud technology initiatives for Pacific governments and seabed mapping and analysis. U.S. environmental officials are planning a drinking water sampling project in Palau, along with training for local operators and laboratory staff. Christopher Landau’s announcement groups these initiatives under the wider U.S. commitment of more than $150 million. Several components still depend on congressional action, but USTDA has already approved or funded multiple feasibility studies and technical assistance projects across the Pacific Islands.
