RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – The Hawk Fire near Reno has led to the destruction of 47 homes and one commercial building. Firefighters managed to raise containment to 85% late Tuesday. Since Saturday, the wildfire scorched 15,067 acres through dry terrain northwest of the city. The latest assessment revealed eight additional homes with severe damage. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities, but seven people sustained injuries during firefighting efforts. The damage count increased significantly from earlier estimates. Meanwhile, crews maintained the fire’s overall size as containment efforts advanced.

Washoe County assessment teams completed an initial survey of neighborhoods affected by the fire on Tuesday. Most losses were located west of U.S. Highway 395, with fewer damaged properties on the eastern side. Authorities reported canine search teams checked the affected areas and found no signs of victims. The fire traveled roughly six miles in its first 24 hours. Its rapid spread led to large-scale evacuations across communities north and northwest of Reno. Damage teams continued documenting destruction as residents received updates about affected properties.

On Tuesday, authorities allowed approximately 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 to return home as conditions improved. About 5,000 people still remained under evacuation orders at the afternoon briefing. Some neighborhoods moved from mandatory evacuation to lower alert levels as crews secured containment lines. Road access also improved after closures had disrupted travel through northern Reno. Returning residents faced damaged utilities, debris, and lingering hot spots near their properties. Officials emphasized checking current evacuation information before entering restricted areas.

    Containment Progress Eases Evacuations

Firefighters kept the Hawk Fire at 15,067 acres while expanding containment around its edges. The number of personnel on scene dropped to 586 late Tuesday as containment increased. Crews continued to monitor hot spots, reinforce fire lines, and work around damaged neighborhoods. The response involved hundreds of firefighters, engines, helicopters, and other resources from multiple U.S. states. Additional personnel from Australia and New Zealand also arrived. Their focus was on securing existing lines and reducing residual heat inside the burned area.

Investigators have classified the Hawk Fire as human-caused. They are still examining how it started. No details have been released about whether it was accidental or intentional. The fire began Saturday near the Somersett area and spread rapidly through dry vegetation. Strong winds pushed flames toward populated areas of northwest Reno on the first day. Firefighters later gained control as conditions allowed them to strengthen containment lines. No further information about the ignition’s origin has been provided by officials.

    State Support Enhances Firefighting Efforts

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend. This declaration directed state agencies to assist local operations through Nevada’s emergency management system. It also facilitated coordination for firefighting, public safety, and recovery efforts in areas impacted by the Hawk Fire. State resources helped local crews as evacuation zones expanded and thousands of residents evacuated. The emergency declaration is scheduled to remain in effect through August 29 unless sooner terminated. Emergency operations also supported local agencies managing evacuations, public information, and community aid.

The fire damaged power infrastructure, including about 100 wooden utility poles, as it moved through Reno. Utility crews worked to restore power as residents returned to neighborhoods that reopened for reentry. Firefighters continued patrols, damage inspections, and safety checks around the perimeter late Tuesday. Authorities also kept updating evacuation zones as restrictions changed across the affected region. The confirmed toll was 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged, and one commercial building lost. With containment at 85%, crews stayed engaged in suppression and safety activities across the fire zone.
